Surgical Instructions for Patients

Pre-Op Instructions

Patients who have been prescribed Coumadin, daily aspirin, or any other blood thinning therapy by their medical physician will need to discontinue this treatment three to four days prior to surgery. We will obtain your physician's approval and instructions to suspend this therapy before your surgical appointment, and we will advise you accordingly. Patients can usually resume their therapy regimen the day after surgery.

Pre-Op Information Regarding Soft Tissue Surgery.

Connective tissue grafts are designed to cover the root surface. We can expect a success rate of 90% of the root to be covered 90% of the time. If the results of a connective tissue graft fall short of your expectations, the graft can be attempted a second time at no additional charge.

Post-Op Information Following Soft Tissue Surgery

You may expect to have some discomfort when the anesthetic wears off. Therefore, we advise that you start taking your pain medication, either prescription or over the counter, before all numbness has subsided. You should consistently feel better each day following treatment. Should discomfort increase after 3-4 days, please call the office.

Post-Op Information Following Osseous Surgery

Begin to rinse daily with Peridex after breakfast and before bedtime starting 24 hours after your surgery. Proper home care helps prevent infection and aids healing. Peridex will reduce the bacteria count in your mouth during the healing process. Continue the Peridex twice daily for eight days.

Post-Op Information Following a Sinus Graft

Take your prescribed medications as reviewed and as noted on your Medication Information Sheet. You may expect to have some discomfort when the anesthetic wears off. Therefore, we advise that you start taking your pain medication, either prescription or over the counter, before all numbness has subsided. You should consistently feel better each day following treatment. Should discomfort increase after 3-4 days, please call the office.

Post-Op Information Following Implant Placement

Some facial swelling and/or bruising near the surgical area may become apparent. A warm pack can be applied at this time to aid in comfort and reduce swelling and bruising. Alternate the warm pack on and off in 15 minute intervals. Continue as needed.

Post-Op Information Following Implant Placement and Sinus Grafting

Post-Op Information Following Laser Periodontal Disease Treatment

Do not be alarmed with any color changes or appearance of tissues following laser therapy. Tissues can be gray, yellow, red, blue, purple, “stringy” and reflect normal response to laser treatments.
